31/3/2008Lenzie Woman is Clearing Out

Christine McKay from Lenzie has successfully launched her own business helping people declutter their homes, after participating in a special programme to help people on benefits become self employed. Christine, 31, had suffered from clinical depression and panic attacks which affected her ability to work and she had been unemployed for over 10 years, surviving on Income Support and Disability Living Allowance.   Her disability adviser recognised her determination to improve her prospects and referred her to the Business Able programme where she was assigned a business advisor, Linda McCallum from DHP Scotland who helped her develop new skills, build her knowledge and confidence and work up plans for her innovative business idea.   Christine has now launched All Sorted De-Cluttering Services, based in Lenzie, which aims to help clients clear out any unwanted items they may have stored in cupboards or lofts, as well as re-arranging items to give the best use of space.  Among her highlights to date is an appearance on the Fred MacAulay show on BBC Radio Scotland. Christine said, “This programme has helped to transform my life and I now feel for the first time in years that I have a real future to look forward to. Linda, my adviser on Business Able, has been fantastic, helping and encouraging me every step of the way and giving me the confidence to go for it. I have no hesitation in recommending this programme to anyone out there who is stuck in a rut, on benefits, and wants to pursue the dream of becoming their own boss.” Christine’s business advisor, Linda McCallum, DHP Scotland, said, “Christine is a delightful person who is determined to prove her worth in an unusual market niche.  Christine is an inspiration to the many other people out there on benefits who have ideas and dreams and the determination to improve their lives through the self employment route.” The Business Able programme is designed to help people with disabilities off benefits and into self employment, by working with a specialist business advisor who can also deal with benefits and financial issues.   Participants discuss and agree with their personal business advisor a flexible programme and work at their own pace learning basic business skills, undertaking market research and finalising their business plan and it is stressed that participants continue to receive their full entitlement to benefits throughout the programme. DHP Scotland, who deliver the Business Able programme on behalf of Scottish Enterprise in Scotland, deliver a range of other programmes that encourage and equip people on benefits for the world of self employment.  For further information on Business Able and other self-employment programmes, contact DHP Scotland on 0141 221 9798. To find out more about All Sorted De-Cluttering Services log on
